Tequila vs Mezcal

Some of you may be aware of Mezcal, some of you not, but either way you should! No its not a dirty Tequila offcast that you drink with a worm (well, maybe in some cases), but Mezcal has been around a lot longer then tequila, in fact, Tequila is a type of Mezcal!. Mezcal was first distilled by the spanish conquestadors, but quickly got adopted by the locals, and soon it was a thriving family business. However, a certain part of Mexico, Tequila Town, quickly established itself as having a superier type of product. Using a cousin of the maguay agave used in making Mezcal, the blue webber agave, and by steaming the pina rather than cooking it in coals, a distinctly different product arose....Tequila. So named after the the town it was discovered in, quickly became a more popular drink, and via some wealthy families (Cuervo and Sauza to name two), was soon being exported to the U.S.A, where it became apparent that the locals were more than impressed with their southern nieghbours talents. Thanks to a beautiful lady named Margarita and a talented barman obviously encaptured by her beauty, the most perfect cocktail, and probably the most popular, was invented!

At Amigos, we are in the process of building a brand new Tequila Bar, where we will bring you an excellent range of Mezcals and Tequilas, for you to try.

Hope to see you soon...
